For and About NPCC Students

Bullying

purple ribbonLike so many, any sense of pride or accomplishment I had about today (Thursday) was overshadowed by the news of one man. Before today I had never heard of Clint McCance. But like so many, his is a name that I won’t soon forget. The best words that I am able to use here are saddening and disappointing in response to his comments in his Facebook page. Certainly everyone is entitled to their beliefs and religious convictions. But, it should be the goal of everyone in education to help especially young people to learn, experience and grow.

Whether it’s to a co-worker, a spouse, a student or a child, bullying is bullying and bullying is wrong. We must resolve to not tolerate this injustice. So, I urge my fellow NPCC students, my fellow Arkansans, my fellow Americans to do the right thing. Say NO to bullying and let those that do it know that we will not tolerate it any more.

“How My Garden Grows”

Submitted by Doug Phillips:

My garden grows from experience. I worked with plants professionally for fifteen years. I started at a large wholesale nursery and then moved into the retail and landscaping business. When I moved back home to Arkansas, my place had some land, so I decided to have a garden. After twenty years plus of research, the following are the methods that have worked for me.

The first step in planting a garden is where to plant. We will want to get out a compass and find out which direction is south. Next, find a sunny spot with southern exposure. We have lots of trees, so make sure the garden will not be shaded when the trees are fully leafed out. Personally, I like some shade in the afternoon because we have such hot summers. This can be obtained by having some shade on the west-side.

Libertarian or Liberal?

LIBERTARIAN OR LIBERAL?
By Doug Phillips

I must admit, the Libertarian Party has always intrigued me. So much so, I was the Chairman of the Arkansas Libertarian Party from 1987 to 1989. What I admire about the Libertarian Party is there is always an answer to every question. After a while, I realized I did not always agree with those answers. It was at this point; I decided I was really a liberal. In order to explain why, I think we should look at the libertarian and liberal political philosophies.

Our Trip to the Northeast

Submitted by Doug Phillips

OUR TRIP TO THE NORTHEAST
By Douglas A. Phillips

Our trip to the Northeast started at an unlikely place, the University of Southern California Medical Center. My father and I were with my mother who was there to have a life saving surgery called a Whipple. The Whipple surgery involves removing the cancerous lymph nodes and any cancer on the pancreas and liver. For mother, a cancer survivor since 2001, this was her third surgery and the most difficult. While we were waiting, out of the blue, my mother said, “I’ve always wanted to see the leaves change up north.” I said, “You mean like up in New Hampshire and Vermont?” She said, “Yes, I just want to take a drive and see all the colors.” “We’ll do it”, I said with enthusiasm. “ Wow, it will be great.”
